Author description

Jill Marshall was born in Manchester, England a very long time ago. She knew from a very young age that she wanted to be an author when she grew up. Then when she grew up, she somehow forgot that this what she was going to do. Instead she went off to Cambridge University to study History, and then went into a career in Human Resources and Training and Development (which meant that she hired people, sometimes fired people, and trained them in between times). In 2000, Jill suddenly remembered what it was she'd wanted to be when she grew up. An author! So she went back to university, took a Master's Degree in Writing for Children, met some brilliant people, and started writing books. Several terrible books later Jill wrote a story about a girl spy called Jane Blonde. It turned out to be the first of seven in the best-selling series about the Sensational Spylet, aka Janey Brown, which is sold in 22 countries and 10 or more languages. Jill has also written picture books for younger children, the Doghead duo for boys, and three books for adults, and is now returning to her girl fans with a new series about the extraordinary Matilda Peppercorn. In the meantime, while she was doing all this writing, Jill had forgotten that she used to enjoy training and developing people and being a business woman. So when she's not writing her own books, she helps others learn how to do it through her writing consultancy Write Good Stuff. And since the terrible earthquake in Christchurch spurred her on to start her own publishing company to bring out fundraising picture book 'Curly from Shirley, the Christchurch Dog', Jill is thrilled to be able to publish other people's books, too, through Pear Jam Books. Since 2003, Jill has lived in Auckland, New Zealand, with her daughter and her dappy dog, Lewis. She enjoys singing, acting and dancing, and dreams of one day being on Dancing with the Stars.
